NDK SPECIALIST BLOCK COURSE IN SEA KAYAK EXPEDITIONING and COACHING.

IDEAL FOR THE INTERMEDIATE LEVEL KAYAKER.
AIM:- The aim of this course is to provide candidates with an intensive 16 week experience in sea kayaking with the view of producing a high standard of Coaches and Expedition leaders. We will try and find seasonal work for all course candidates following the course. This work will take the form of placement both Nationally and Internationally.  
 
PRE REQUISITS:- Candidates must have a personal skill level equal to the old BCU Four Star Award or new UKCC Three Star. Candidates do not however need to hold the Four Star Award. Candidates must have a good level of fitness and hold a current Passport.

COURSE CONTENT:-

Week 1

During the first week we will look at personal skills and complete a four star training course, navigation, kayaking equipment, expeditioning from a sea kayak. We will also look at the BCU coaching scheme, sea kayak design & paddle design, eskimo rolling in the swimming pool, first aid course.

Week 2

Candidates will spend a min of 2 / 3 day’s in the Sea Kayaking UK factory looking at how sea kayaks are manufactured and an in depth look at sea kayak repair. This will be a hands on practical session. 2 day’s sea kayaking- Eskimo rolling in the swimming pool.

Week 3

Depart Spain. Course members will travel by road to El Chorro on the Costa Del Sol.
Set up camp.
Look at night kayaking and night navigation.
Some mountain walking in the area will also be offered, as a recreation alternative.

Week 4

During the first week in Spain we will run the following courses:
FSRT  Foundation Safety and Rescue Test
Three star training / assessment
Coach 1/2 training.
Four star training.
Coastal Navigation.
Travel to Tarifa and set up camp.

Week 5

Plan and undertake the week expedition in Morocco or Portugal (Expedition 001)

Week 6
Plan and undertake the week expedition Spain/Gibraltar. (Expedition 002)

Week 7
Travel back to the UK. On the way back we will run a three day introduction course to Surfing.

Week 8
This will be the only official time off.

Week 9
Visit H M Coastguard, the RNLI and 22 squadron at RAF Valley. This will help all understand how the rescue teams operate and the implications for sea kayakers and Expedition leaders / coaches. During this week we will also look at navigation and an introduction to white water kayaking.  VHF Operators license.

Week 10
White water kayaking to include 3 star training and assessment.(Inland)

Week 11
Introduction to tidal races and overfalls. Surfing if the weather does not allow sea kayaking.
The Sea kayaking will take place around Anglesey.

Week 12
Concentrate on improving moving water skills. Expedition to Bardsey Island by sea kayak. Possible circumnavigation of Anglesey.

Week 13
Coaching under 18’s and adults at UKCC Level 1

Week 14
UKCC Level 2 Training or the Sea Moderate Water Award.

Week 15
Coaching sea kayaking at UKCC Level 1 and 2 (Working with students )

Week 16
Attend and assist The Anglesey Sea Kayaking Symposium. (First week of May 2011)
Sea Moderate Water Award            (Subject to the candidates experience and skill)
4 Star Assessment if not completed already            (Subject to the candidates experience and skill)
5 Star Training            (Subject to the candidates experience and skill)
Other courses within the new Coaching Scheme may be available.
When candidates leave the course they will be entitled to a free Five Star Assessment, within a twelve month period. The twelve month period will run from the end of the course. Candidates are invited to attend the relevant scheduled coaching courses run by NDK.
 
NOTE:- Candidates may take any of the above Assessment courses during the block course subject to availability and personal skill and experience.
 
Week 9 – 16 will comprise of five day’s instruction, candidates will be welcome to use  equipment at weekends provided they hold the four star award and have completed a risk assessment sheet of their intended kayaking trips / sessions.
 
Although we cannot guarantee work we will undertake to find work placements for June, July and August following the course. This work may well include overseas placements.
 
 
Course fees will include:
  • Transport to and from activities.
  • Food as per the proposed two week menu. The menu will be repeated every two weeks. Although the food is provided candidates are to prepare food as necessary.
  • All equipment as needed.
  • Accommodation.
  • Instruction.

Does not include:
  • BCU / WCA fees.
  • RYA fees.
