1.1:
Navigation
This is aimed at the four to five star kayakers. The workshop will include a theory session covering tides, route planning, buoy age and seat of the pants navigation. The day will end with a practical navigation course. Recommended to all kayakers who intend undertaking a five star assessment who may be a little rusty on navigation. 1.2:Living off the natural marine environment Explore the coastline finding out what we can eat. Collect food and catch fish from your kayak. The day will end with a fire and a meal. The meal will be as good as the food you gather. 1.3:In the field kayak repair This is a chance to undertake some rough water landings. Damage a kayak and undertake in the field kayak repairs. We will look at repairing a holed kayak, replacing skeg wires and ropes, split seams and on the water repairs. 1.4:Tidal races and over falls This day will cover the following: how races and over falls are formed, group control, rescuing and the development of personal skills. 1.5:Incident management A chance to paddle into situations that perhaps you have always kept away from, be rescued and help rescue others. We will look at the use of towlines, paddle parks and drogues 1.6:Moving water skills Learn to control your sea kayak in moving water. Breaking in out, paddling down wind, surfing, edging and roll in moving water. 1.7:Sea safety The day will cover rescues, towing, Coastguard and RNLI rescue procedures, a look at H and Safety requirements. Flairs, VHF uses, and some basic sea survival. 1.8:Leadership / Seaman ship Read the sea and understand eddies, foam lines, wave shapes etc.. Leading groups in areas of tidal races and over falls. Running before a following sea, paddling in swells etc. Half-day clinics
2.1: Choosing a kayak The best way to chose a kayak is to gain advice on the best type of design that suits your requirements, i.e. speed, manageability, stability, hull shapes etc. You will then be asked to try kayaks that we may consider most suitable to your needs. Talk to the manufacturers etc. 2.2:Sea kayak strokes Improve your sea kayaking skills with tips on strokes specific to sea kayaks to also include windy conditions. 2.3:Navigation (Theory) This workshop will be run covering navigation to a greater depth. We would recommend that you have a basic knowledge of tides and the use of a compass prior to attending this session. 2.4:Use of Video Use of video for coaching and expedition filming. A theoretical and practical session providing tips on editing and equipment choice. 2.5:Forward paddling and choosing the right paddle We will look into paddle length, stiffness and blade shapes. Look into personal recommended paddle specification. Forward paddling technique on flat, flowing seas and rough water. Personal technique. The session will include some video analysis. 2.6:Rescue techniques This session will look at rescues that work in intermediate to advanced conditions. Use of towlines. 2.7:TBA 2.8:Factory visit Visit the factory; see how fibreglass kayaks are made. On the water repair kits. 2.9:Rolling Sea Kayaks The main aim of this session is to teach you a method of rolling that suits your personal needs. i.e. leaning forwards / backwards rolling on the left or right et The role will need to work on the open sea, with fully laden kayaks and in windy conditions. 2.10:Risk assessment Assessing risk from a group leaders and managers perspective 2.11:Minimising sea kayak injuries All too often tendonitis, back pain et are caused by inappropriate equipment and personal technique. We will look at how to minimise the risk of kayaking related injuries. 2.12:Night kayaking This module will look at night navigation, group control, leadership etc 2.13:Expedition Fist Aid This module will put into practice all that is covered in the lecture session (Ref 3:2) One hour lectures
3.1:Tides A lecture on tides covering Spring/Neap tides, drying heights, chart symbols, tide tables etc. 3.2:Expedition Fist Aid Putting an expedition first aid kit together (cold and hot countries). This will include emergency dental treatment. 3.3:Kayak repair (plastic and glass) An in-depth look at the best way to repair plastic sea kayaks. Glues, welding or patching. 3.4:Paddle design Customising a paddle (choosing the right specification) 3.5: Clothing This lecture will cover new developments within the industry and look at the requirements of protective clothing whilst undertaking extended expeditions. Will also include protection from UV etc. 3.6:Sea Kayak design A look at sea kayak design taking into consideration the pros and cons of different design features. This lecture will hopefully give you some idea of what design features you need to look at when choosing a sea kayak. 3.7:Expedition sea kayaking equipment A one-hour lecture on equipment to carry for expedition sea kayaking, Tips from the experts; water purification, stoves, VHF and GPS sets etc. 3.8:Search and rescue of sea kayakers Modern day search patterns used by the RNLI in order to look for missing persons. This will look at how the coastguard / RNLI would work out search patterns and what you should and should not do. 3.9: The Weather Understanding the weather and applying it practically to sea kayaking. 3.10: The BCU and ACA Understanding the BCU (British Canoe Union) and ACA (American Canoe Association) Coaching schemes. 3.11: Basic Chart Work Understanding the information you can obtain from charts, OS maps and other admiralty sources of information. 3.12:Basic Navigation This will cover the use of compasses both fixed and hand held. Transits lines, Lon and lat etc 3.13: The Use of GPS How can we fully utilise and understand the GPS while sea kayaking. This is aimed at kayakers who have little or no prior knowledge of GPS. |
